A photo of a woman embracing an infant has surfaced on Facebook and Twitter. It’s been claimed the mother tested positive for the coronavirus and that her newborn baby is on the brink of death with cancer.

A Facebook user, Mahmoud Hafez, has posted the photo on Friday morning, April 24, with a text that reads, “The mother has tested positive for the coronavirus and the baby is a cancer patient on the brink of death. Doctors have done everything they can and now he is in the hands of God. O God, those who resend this (news) to one group may never go to hell.” His post has been shared over 65,000 times in 24 hours with over 40,000 reactions and 80,000 comments, most of which are prayers for her recovery.

The same photo has been posted by a number of social media users such as @amer3111 on Twitter and “Wardeh” on Facebook.

It is a 1985 photo

Verify-Sy Platform searched for the original photo using a TinEye reverse image search. We found that it was published on Magnum Photos in 2013.

“Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center - Infant inside Laminar Air Flow Room protection from infection. The child has been irradiated prior to marrow transplant. / Seattle, Washington, USA. 1985,” the photo description reads.

The late photo/grapher Burt Glin (1925-2008) was the one who captured it.

Verify-Sy couldn’t obtain information about the health condition of the mother.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been accompanied with ‘disinfodemic,’ a term which has been coined to describe the misinformation that's accompanied the pandemic.
